Mandarin Course – Critical Features to Look For When Choosing a Mandarin Chinese Course

Although you’re never ’stuck’ having to use one particular Mandarin Chinese course (you can always check out another one), it takes away a lot of hassle if you can choose one that suits your needs the first time. There are a variety of features that are important to look for when choosing a course for learning Mandarin Chinese, and I have outlined some of them here for you.

Comprehensive. It’s important that the lesson material in your Mandarin Chinese course covers a decent range of topics. You want your course to be teaching you some functional Mandarin, and that’s not going to happen if the whole course is based around one single topic or situation.

Audio-based. It’s important that the lessons in your Mandarin Chinese course have audio components such as dialogues being spoken aloud, or individual words being pronounced by a native speaker. It’s important because you need to be learning the correct sound of the language. Listening to your lessons, instead of just reading them in a textbook, will give you a great head start in listening comprehension and you will be better able to hold a conversation.
However, you don’t want lessons that are purely audio files. Look for a course that provides lesson transcripts in Pinyin, Chinese characters, and an English translation.

Look for a course that introduces you to all of the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course should also introduce you to some grammar, and teach you a bit about the culture. Apart from better being able to show cultural respect, learning about the culture will help you grasp idioms more easily.

It helps if the language course has a variety of games or activities to help you master vocabulary instead of expecting you to learn words by repetition. Repetition is the slow and painful way to learn. With some vocabulary games you’ll master phrases before you know it – and you’ll even have some fun doing it.

So, those are the important key aspects to look out for. If you choose a Mandarin language course that incorporates these features you’ll have a much easier time learning Mandarin Chinese.
